What To Do When Your Password is Hacked

If you receive an alert that your user name and password are on the dark web, you’re not alone. Just last week, over 16 billion breached passwords — that’s 16 BILLION with a “B” new passwords — were discovered on the Dark Web.

This guide walks you through exactly what to do.

Step 1: Change Your Passwords Immediately

As soon as you learn your credentials have been exposed:

    • Change the password for the affected account.
    • Check if that same password is used on other platforms—if so, change those too.
    • Use a strong, unique password for each account.

Extra Tip: Use A Password Manager

Password managers generate and store complex passwords securely. We have vetted and use Dashlane. Avoid LastPass due to too many breaches in the past.

Reusing Passwords is a Common Bad Practice, and Hackers Love It

According to a survey conducted by Forbes Advisor in 2024, 78% of individuals reuse their password across multiple accounts.

When a hacker gets access to one account with a reused password, they often get access to other accounts. These are the targets hackers are looking for.

Reduce your risk by making it harder for hackers:

    • Keep your work and personal accounts totally separate from each other.
    • Do not reuse passwords for access to your financial institutions such as banks or credit card companies.

Step 2: Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Even a strong password isn’t enough if someone already has it. MFA adds a second layer of protection.

    • Use authenticator apps (like Microsoft Authenticator or Duo).
    • Avoid relying solely on text message codes.

Step 3: Review Account Activity for Suspicious Behavior

Look for signs that someone may have already accessed your account:

    • Unexpected login locations
    • New forwarding rules in email accounts
    • Changed recovery emails or phone numbers
    • Recent password reset attempts

Step 4: Notify Your IT Provider or MSP

Notify your IT team immediately. They should:

    • Audit your systems for intrusion
    • Revoke unauthorized access
    • Monitor for lateral movement or other compromised accounts
    • Set up dark web monitoring if not already in place

Hire A Better Choice Network Solutions if you do not have an IT Team to turn to.

Step 5: Monitor for Ongoing Threats

Hackers will sell and resell breached passwords. Ongoing dark web monitoring is essential to catch future exposures early.

    Ask your IT provider about:

    • Credential exposure alerts
    • Password policy enforcement
    • Continuous monitoring for your company domain(s)

    Step 6: Educate Your Team

Your cybersecurity is only as strong as your weakest link. Make sure your employees:

    • Avoid password reuse (include it in a policy manual)
    • Use password managers (provide one you want them to use)
    • Understand phishing risks (many dark web breaches start with a phishing email)
    • Report suspicious emails and login activity

Don’t Wait for a Breach to Become a Disaster

Many Florida business owners learn too late that their breached passwords are on the Dark Web.
